Vaping Sees Epic Trends in 2016

The history of vaping goes back to 1965 when Herbert A. Gilbert was granted a U.S. patent for a “smokeless nontobacco cigarette,” that would provide “a safe and harmless means for and method of smoking” by replacing burning tobacco and paper with heated, moist, flavored air. The Favor cigarette was introduced in 1986 as one of the first so-called electronic cigarettes. But neither invention gained much traction and e-cigarettes were largely disregarded until a Chinese pharmacist patented an atomizing electronic cigarette in 2003 and gained financial backing to introduce it to the Chinese market.

E-Cigs Come to the U.S.

E-cigarettes began appearing in the U.S. market in the mid-2000s, and by 2015—the most recent full-year statistics available—2.75 million smokers had tried e-cigarettes, representing about 6% of the 45 million smokers nationwide. Demographically, younger smokers were four times more likely to have used e-cigarettes than their older counterparts.

While some have railed against e-cigarettes’ popularity among younger persons, overwhelming statistical evidence points out that, while not harmless, vaporized nicotine is much less toxic than combustible tobacco. And according to, the success rate of smoking cessation among “vapers” is up to four times higher than quitting traditional cigarettes.

Reusable Pens Dominate the Vaping Market

The first e-cigarettes were made with disposable plastic holders, roughly the size and shape of traditional cigarettes. But as technology evolved, reusable, rechargeable vaping pens began taking over the market, cutting the amount of plastic waste in landfills dramatically. According to Boulder-based BDS Analytics, cartridge and refillable-chamber vape pens account for 81% of sales in shops in states where marijuana is legal, and the volume more than doubled between 2015 and 2016 with nearly 4 million units sold.

This is good news for both the environment and consumers, drastically reducing post-consumer waste and causing prices to drop by as much as 20% in a single year.
